Balancing Heat Illness Protections and COVID-19 applies to all outdoor workers.

Heat is one of the leading weather-related killers in the United States, resulting in hundreds of fatalities each year and even more heat-related illnesses. Employers must now protect workers from both COVID-19 and heat illness as the National Weather Service has issued extreme heat warnings in numerous states over the past several months.

In this webinar, we discuss California’s heat illness prevention standard, which applies to all outdoor workers. While there is no corresponding federal standard for heat stress or heat illness prevention, the Occupational Safety and Health Administration investigates and cites incidents of worker heat illness under the general duty clause of the Occupational Safety and Health Act of 1970. This webinar also addresses the appropriate steps employers need to take to prevent the spread of COVID-19 while protecting employees from heat.
